Making the Floor cloth
Floor cloths are made to order. The process takes between 2-6 weeks depending on the size and complexity of the design. In the first step, 100% cotton canvas is preshrunk and cut to size. The second step is to miter the corners and sew the hem. This ensures a durable rug that lays flat and does not curl at the edges. The third step is priming the front and the back of the rug. The fourth step is painting the background colors on. The fifth step is painting the layers required to create the details of the design. The sixth step is applying three to five layers of protective coating to insure ease of cleaning and years of durable use. All floor cloths are made with heavy 100% cotton and are hand painted with non toxic acrylic paint and water based sealants. They are then ready to be shipped.

A Brief History
Floor cloths are one of the earliest forms of interior decorating. The first floorcloths were made by Colonial women who created "carpet" by cutting off and painting undamaged portions of the the worn sails from the ships that brought their supplies. The heavy canvas used for sails cut the cold drafts in winter and were cool under foot in summer. Hand painting and stencils were used to create the classic Colonial style. Canvas rug became so popular they were advertised in papers in New York, Boston and Philadelphia as easly as 1720. Their ease of cleaning and durability made them particularly desirable. George Washington ordered several floorcloths for his retirement home in Mt. Vernon and are listed in his household inventory. Floorcloths went out of fashon around 1850 when linoleum was invented. Linoleum was mass produced and became the floor covering of choice over the more costly hand painted canvas rug. Floorcloths regained popularity in the mid 1950's because of their historical signifigance and their many benifts.

Moon Flower In this example the" floor cloth" design was painted directly onto the deck at the request of the homeowner. Faux bamboo hangers painted in the corners support the blooming Moon Flower vine. Round Rug This particular rug measures 8 feet across. The cream colored border and graceful curving design pop off the maroon background. Round rugs need no hem because they are made with extra heavy canvas and lay flat due to the weight of the canvas and the paint.
